In ancient years it was known for its mines, which began working again at the beginning of the 20th century. Today the mines are closed and Lavrio is now known for its port, which serves isolated islands nearby. Lavrio is 60 km from the center of Athens and 25 km from the airport.
Most ships depart Lavrio for the islands of Kea and Kythnos. It also serves islands of the Northern Aegean, such as Limnos, Agios Efstratios and Samothraki.
