Rethymno is the 3rd biggest city in Crete, after Heraklion and Chania. A lot of tourists visit it during summer, while more than 10,500 students live in the city, make it especially alive for the rest of the year.
In Rethymno monuments from the Venetian and the Ottoman period coexist. Rethymno is characterised by its mountains. Psiloritis, the highest and most famous mountain of Crete overlooks the eastern part of the prefecture.
With a height of 2,456 meters, it covers the 1/5 of the whole area of the prefecture. The mountain range of Kedros, with a height of 1,777 meters is situated in the southwest of Psiloritis and together they define the gorgeous Amari valley.
In the northeastern edge of the prefecture Kouloukounas or Talea mountain rise. with a height of 1083 meters, and in the south of Rethymno we meet the heights of Vrisina (858 meters).
Finally, in the southwest, Krionetiris, with a height of 1,312 meters, is the easternmost top of the White Mountains.
